STFC MAYHEM

On 5/24 STFC Mayhem drew a crowd of 1,826 with 1,150 in attendance purchasing tickets and 676 being comped. The total gate for tickets paid was a impressive $53,040. 133% increase in revenue compared to the stacked STFC Bad Blood. It should be noted that half of the tickets for Bad Blood were comped. The show was headline by DJ Fuentes (local fighter)defending his featherweight title against Javier Obregon(out of town fighter). The best selling ticket for this event were the $30(total of $10,920) and surprisingly enough the $75 tickets brought in a outstanding $23,250. Only 288 people bought the cheap seats(myself included) totaling $4,470. This impressive gate could be credited to that STFC uses local fighters which is what made the local crowd come out and support the fighters and the promotion. The Mayhem card had a total of 18 fighters with only 4 fighters coming in from out of town. STFC managed to get more revenue out of one price tier than J&C Productions did for their entire show.

Cavazos Boxing

On 4/26 Cavazos Boxing put on a 5 fight showcase with Edinburg’s own Raul “El Tigre” Casarez headlining against Raymond Gatica from Austin. Casarez was coming off a devastating knockout loss that came at the hands of a returning Alfredo Angulo on Showtime. The show drew a crowd of 1,181 with 891 paying for tickets. The gross gate was $37,100. Not too bad for a show that only had five fights. The show featured 10 fighters with 3 fighters coming in from Mexico and 1 coming in from out of town(Gatica). Boxing drawing well down here in the RGV isn’t surprising since the Mcallen- Harlingen is a hotbed for boxing with the area ranking in the top 5  strongest boxing metropolitan area markets per capita in the country for boxing as reported by Dave Meltzer from the May 3 edition of The Wrestling Observer.

J&C Productions Presents “Pride of The Valley 2” 

In their second installment of the “Pride of The Valley” J & C Productions drew a paying crowd of 338 and a gate of $14,634 tickets were comped. Compared to their first event held in March, this event drew -10% less revenue.  I did have a feeling this show wouldn’t be a strong draw but I had no idea it would draw so poorly. The production that J & C do for their shows is top notch but I believe their issue is that they brought in too many fighters from outside the RGV. The 9 fight card was headline by Cody Williams from Beaumont taking on D’Angelo De Souza Vierira who resides in San Antonio. 10 out of the 18 fighters that fought on “Pride of The Valley” were from out of town.  Outside names are not going to get local people in the seats and the numbers just prove that. If a show is going to title their show “Pride of the Valley” and not bring in more local talent, they should have at least made DJ Fuentes the headliner even if he was coming off a loss. Fuentes has been a fixture here in the RGV MMA scene for quite sometime now and using him as the marquee name on the card would have been a wise move.  Hell, Matt Mooney vs Leeroy Martinez could have headline as well since there was a back story and featured two local guys settling a issue.
