Frankie Edgar Drops Downs to 145 lbs

According to MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani, former UFC lightweight kingpin Frankie Edgar has decided to drop down to 145 lbs. Lots of thoughts on this. Personally, I thought Edgar won his last fight against Henderson, so I think he’s currently the best 155 lbs fighter on the planet. So I think it’s a shame that he’s dropping down since, as a fan, I would love to see him fight the likes of Diaz, Cerrone, Pettis, Jim Miller, Guida, Guillard and other high level guys at 155 lbs. Also, he had a great speed advantage, quick footwork and was awesome at changing levels from boxing to wrestling. Even though he is much smaller than Maynard and Henderson, he still took them both down numerous times. Will that speed and skill set translate to 145 lbs? I hope so.

On the other hand, he’s probably feeling a lot of pressure from everyone around him and if Henderson retains against Diaz, it will be forever until he gets another crack at the title. The road to a featherweight title shot might be seen as an easier path and it could be depending on who he faces next. Personally, I think Edgar should beat every 145 lbs fighter put in front of him except Aldo.

Even though I would rather have him fight at 155 lbs, I am still excited about seeing a clear top ten pound for pound fighter face off against the likes of  Aldo, The Korean Zombie, and Charles Oliveira.
