It’s funny hearing how some people are reacting about Mayweather’s opponent Robert Guerrero. Regardless of how tonight’s tilt went down, Guerrero was the best option when the fight was made. There wasn’t really some better challenger out there, at least not realistically. People are acting like Mayweather picked a jobber just because he dominated him. Well, he beat him like that cause he’s the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. Looking at the list of opponents within the weight range:
147 lbs.
1. Juan Manuel Marquez – Signed with Top Rank Promotions; Mayweather beat him already.
2. Manny Pacquiao – Signed with Top Rank Promotions; not going to happen. Get over this fight already people!
3. Timothy Bradley – Signed with Top Rank Promotions; not going to happen.
4. Robert Guerrero – He fought him; option that made the most sense.
5. Paulie Malignaggi – Paulie is a fun commentator, I like him a lot. But let’s be real here.
6. Devon Alexander – When this was falsely announced, everyone was pissed!
154 lbs.
1. Canelo Alvarez – When the fight was made, Guerrero was the better option in terms of recent accomplishments. Canelo was the better option in terms of marketing.
2. Austin Trout – Would have been good but the buzz was on Trout to face Canelo, not Mayweather. It worked out for the best having Canelo vs Trout instead of having either face Mayweather.
Misc.
1. Adrien Broner – Broner worships Mayweather, so no. Also, had no fights above 135 lbs (he will in June).
2. Danny Garcia – Still has business at 140 lbs. More interest in seeing him fight the winner of Peterson-Matthysse later this year than a Mayweather fight.
3. Brandon Rios – Signed with Top Rank Promotions, not going to happen.
4. Mike Alvarado – Signed with Top Rank Promotions, not going to happen.
5. Amir Khan – Fun fighter, very entertaining and charismatic. But come on, let’s be real here.
Looking at it like this, it’s easy to see why Robert Guerrero was chosen. He was a credible opponent for Mayweather at this stage of the game and the best option to face the pound-for-pound king.
