Mayweather Return Dates Annnounced

ESPN broke the news with this article about Mayweather’s return:

“Floyd has told us that he is fighting twice in 2013 with the first date being May 4 — Cinco De Mayweather — and the second date being Sept. 14,” Ellerbe said.

This is huge news. Both those dates have become synonymous for huge boxing extravaganzas, the same way Thanksgiving used to be a huge day for professional wrestling. The leading options are obviously Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Roberto Guerrero.

If they wait until September 14th for the Mayweather vs Canelo showdown, it could be a great move if both guys win their fights in the first half of 2013. But it could also be a bad move if either Mayweather or Canelo loses to Guerrero or possibly Trout.

I liked this quote from Leonard Ellerbe, it’s pretty simple and common sense. Yet so many people don’t realize this.

“Who doesn’t want to fight Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and make the most money they ever made in their career? You hit the lottery once you’ve become a Floyd Mayweather opponent.”

Sometimes I’ll hear something like, “Why is [x] fighting [z]? Doesn’t [z] realize he doesn’t have a chance!”. It’s called prize fighting for a reason. When you’re a professional athlete, who’s been training his entire life for a big money fight, and you’ve made enough of a case to fight a superstar, it’s a huge accomplishment in it’s own way. Also, at the end of the day, the superstars need someone to fight with, to prove they are actually top of the food chain boxers. Nobody is higher on the food chain than Mayweather, and both Canelo and Guerrero are great options.
