Bernard Hopkins Wins Another World Title

This past weekend we saw history as Bernard Hopkins broke his own record to be the oldest boxer to ever win a major world title. He used his footwork, his timeless style, and his intelligence to outsmart Tavoris Cloud en route to a clear, unanimous decision victory. Two judges had it 116-112, while one judge had it 117-111.

Cloud just couldn’t get into Hopkins’ rhythm during the course of the fight. Hopkins was having his fight, moving in to land his shots when he saw an opening, while protecting himself from most of Cloud’s punches. The wise old man was just too much for the young titlist.

Now at 48-years-old, it will be interesting to see just how long Hopkins intends to stretch this out. He looked sharp and clever in there, but let’s hope he knows when the right time is to retire. Before he has to make that decision, Hopkins is the reigning IBF light heavyweight champion of the world and I am so happy to have been able to watch him accomplish this feat on HBO boxing. One of the great badasses of our time.
