This past Saturday Austin fight fans were treated to 12 fights(Ramirez/Govea was scratched from the card) that saw two fighters take throne at the top of their division for the Honorious promotion. In the main event of the night, Boone Blair put away San Angelo’s Angel Delgado in the second round of the fight. Boone came out of the gate in the second round throwing strikes and was able to catch Delgado with one which forced the San Angelo native to back up. While Delgado tried to duck the striking onslaught he was in the midst of, he ducked into a vicious left knee of Boone. Delgado immediately dropped and then was peppered with some parting shots before the ref dove in to make the save. It took Delgado a few minutes to recompose himself and still looked wobbly after his post fight interview in which he announced he will be turning pro. Boone on the other hand was draped with his third amateur title belt and looks to be going to the pros as well. It will be interesting to see if these fighters get matched up in the future against each other as pros. One thing I noticed in this fight was the following of Delgado; felt like all of San Angelo came out to support Delgado in his title quest. The San Angelo fan base was immediately felt when the hometown fighter, Boone, was being booed out of the building while the visitor got a roar of cheers.

In the co-main event of the evening, Rjay Casper won an unanimous decision over Beeville’s Rogelio Salazar. It didn’t feel like Casper needed the full five rounds to show who was the superior fighter as he was nearly impossible to take down. There were points were Casper was just jumping on one leg for balance while Salazar tried to take him down. Casper will be a fighter to watch out for in the future when he turns pro. His foot movement and striking are ready for the pro level but it wouldn’t hurt him to get one more fight in at the amateur level if he chooses to do so.

The fight of the night honors belong to Maressa Garcia and Alissa Maldonado. Maldonado, the decorated wrestler, came out of the gate throwing strikes and didn’t stop pushing the pace throughout the fight. For her debut, Maldonado looked very impressive and made her presence known to the Texas fight game that she is going to be a problem. The downside is that there are very few ladies in the fight game right now and not that many atomweight women fighters. Hopefully we get a chance to see the two females in separate bouts down the line since they know how to put on a show.

The entire event was fun even if most of the fights went to decision. Fight fans are always hungry for a finish but the fans in attendance appreciated the work that each fighter was putting in inside the Honorious cage. The next showing for Honorious looks to be around October and I for one can’t wait to see what Nael Chavez and company have in store for the next Honorious event. Till the next one!
